NTU stabbing: Something just waiting to happen?
I believe by this time many people has already got wind of the case surrounding a NTU student stabbing his professor. As a matter of fact, I only knew the entire story this morning when I caught sight of the news on the front page of the newspapers.
I was taking a blood test at NTU Medical Centre yesterday when a nurse came into the lab and told the person who was drawing blood from me that there was a stabbing case and that she and the doctor had to go and handle it. At first, I didn't think much about it, thinking it might be a rift between construction workers or something like that. Never would I have thought that it was between a student and a professor.
With all the stress in Singapore universities, this is something that might have just been waiting to happen. The FYP grade is essential for the type of honours that you will get. No matter how much you have worked for the first class honours, a B grade is enough to pull you down to a second class honours. And it can be very devastating for a student. (I shall shut up about my personal 'grievances'.)
But can we help it? In Singapore, a drop in your honours grade would be equivalent to getting less pay and less chances in your job. All the pressure to perform as well as the stress of having his scholarship revoked from him probably drove the student to the edge.
Many people say that results are not everything, however we are brought up to believe that results are everything. Many people just get over it and hate their university/professor for life and look back thinking how stupid they were in the past to hold on so tightly to that. If only he could move on. The disappointment and fear must be too much for him to handle.
We have been there, done that, seen that, felt that. To be frank, his feelings are not totally that difficult to understand. It is the way that he let it out that led to such tragic consequences. It may also be important to note that not everyone has someone to talk to, to pour out their worries, especially him being a foreign student.
I just have to say, it is such a waste of a precious life.
