Moyashimon Review
Sawaki Tadayasu, a first-year student at the Tokyo Agricultural University, has been able to see microbe since young. The only reason he came to Tokyo was so that he could escape life at home. And therefore begins the story of Moyashimon.
The anime was short, consisting of only 11 episodes. They managed to squeeze quite a number of things into it, but as it was only 11 eps, it left me wondering what would happen next. The way the microbes are portrayed are really cute! However, that is what is so dangerous about it.
When browsing the list of award-winning mangas, I happened to see Moyashimon and in my mind, I thought it belonged in the children's section. I was proved wrong, really wrong. Re-checking wikipedia, Moyashimon belonged to the general manga section, which explains greatly why the not-advisable-for-children elements are there. The cute microbe designs are popular with children, but the story isn't.
I should have known by episode 5 or 6 that Moyashimon is not for children. Wouldn't it be scary if your child suddenly asked you what is an aphrodisiac? Then there is yuri/shoujo-ai and possible yaoi/shounen-ai in it too. The conclusion of the aphrodisiac episode shows 2 girls naked in bed after being stuffed with it, albeit accidentally, then drinking. Both expressed great shock though. Then came what dealt the greatest shock to me about this anime, Yuuki Kei, Tadayasu's childhood friend crossdresses as a gothic lolita...
I have expressed my shock in a few posts before, and I still can't get over it. I presumed Moyashimon would go on with Tadayasu using his ability somehow or other, but it seems that it would also focus on slice-of-life too. The slice-of-life part really got me... Seriously I can't predict what would happen next.
Overall, Moyashimon is a very entertaining anime and the cute microbes are absolutely my favourite! How I wish to own a microbe plushie! However, just don't get as shocked as me when you reach the slice-of-life part!
